Why it works

Students learn by doing the thinking, not by watching you do it. Large reviews of classroom research find that students in active lessons outperform those in mostly lecture lessons. A timer makes your talk time visible and keeps it short.

Step by step

  1. Plan your fiveBefore classDecide the one or two things students must hear from you. Everything else goes in the task.
  2. Start the timerWhen you start talking“I have five minutes. Watch the clock with me.”
  3. TeachUp to 5 minutesWhen the buzzer goes, stop, even mid-sentence.
  4. Hand it off“That’s my time. Your turn.”Launch the task.
  5. Restart only if neededIf you must teach more, take another five later, not now.

See it in action

Explain one phonics pattern in five minutes, then students sort word cards.
